Tribute to the Spyro of Old by KarleKat Tribute to the Spyro of Old by KarleKat
After two games' worth of traversing wacky worlds of all kinds and hearing the same funky tunes on loop, by Year of the Dragon you would have to think Sparx was a little tired of it.

This started out as a sketch of classic Spyro (note the hind legs/paws), turned into a finished computer clipart-ish thing, looked lonely, added a generic happy-mountainy-grassy background, realized Spyro needed a reason for his funny shading and added Sparx having a freakout to justify it.
And the sad thing is, that's how most of my art comes into being - second thought after second thought, mistake after mistake. Pity.
Also, ignore the grass, or if you notice it DON'T SAY ANYTHING TO ME ABOUT IT, because my right wrist will come up with 103 ways to kill you all dead.

And Mario Kart Wii is a blast. They finally did WiFi right.

awwww, man. Spyro was my very favorite game as a kid even though I only had the Year of the Dragon and no memory card. It sure has changed, hasn't it? I really like going back and playing the old one. The graphics are so awesome, what with the pixels and the crazy, uncontrollable camera. Oh, and the great voice acting, where it sounds like they used the same guy for every side character, and just had him do a different accent. XD

Love the pic. I don't see anything wrong with the grass, and I am SUPERIFICALLY in love with the clouds. Hi-five, mai bro.

Indeed it has; I'm not sure why they even kept the name Spyro, as it's misleading to all them there YOUNG'UNS thinking TLOS is the 'true' Spyro. Tch.
I'm such an old lady.
But man I loved the old games to pieces; even the voice acting, yessums. Moneybags and Hunter were my faves. ;)

Thanks though! I've been wanting to do some more Spyro fanart the past couple weeks - must... get past... art block... wooogh.

I think they figure that since they own the copyright and they still have a purple dragon, that it's still the same.
XD the voices in that game do make me happy. My favorite was Bianca, though that may have been because I had a mid-sized crush on her in lyke 5th grade. I win the prize for geek! Woo!

*threatens blockade with flamethrower* Damned art blocks. It's like a cold virus...but worse.

Yep, playing Mario Kart Wii is definitely a blast over the internet! But I can't really tell which is better: Mario Kart DS (I'm totally surprised that I saw one of my favourite girl groups playing it on the advert) or Mario Kart Wii?

Anyhoo, your picture reminds me of how much I  playing the old-school, classic series back when I was little. :aww: Too bad things aren't the same anymore, Spyro was cute back then. Need to buy a Playstation 2 when it's cheaper, methinks. I'd say Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon was an awesome way to celebrate the Year of the Dragon or rather... Chinese New Year (which is tomorrow, the next Year of the Dragon is in two years time. I celebrate Chinese New Year so I usually know the date and the zodiac). :D  Out of the original series, Spyro 1 to 3 were the best ones and brings me back good memories! :happycry:

The DS can get uncomfortable for me to play after a while (and anyway I like a separate controller *picky*), so I'd have to cast my vote for Mario Kart Wii.
It still makes me RAAAAAAAAGE though. ;)

Thank you, and heck yeah! He was more blueish-purple back then as opposed to the near-Crayola-pink he is now, poor little booger. That's awesome though; isn't this year the Year of the Tiger? Good stuff.
I heartily agree though, my most favorite has to be the veeery first one where you rescue all the elder dragons. They always made me smile. :D

Do you ever get road rage sometimes when it comes to Mario Kart? I've played almost every single game except Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart Arcade GP 2. Do you have a Wii number and Mario Kart Wii friend code? I would  to race against you online but our time zones are different from each other.

Yep! It's the year of the Tiger all right but Chinese New Year hasn't finished yet, it started two days ago on the same day as Valentine's Day. :) I'm still celebrating it with my family, I'm not sure if I should believe those Chinese New Year superstitions though. ^^; Oddly enough, Clancy Brown who voices the Dark Dragon from American Dragon: Jake Long voices some of the dragons from the first game. :O_o: :wtf: A bit of a coincidence, huh? :XD:

Oh man, Spyro 1-3 were GREAT. I especially loved Spyro 2... the Scottish level especially where you could loop around this area if you timed it right. You had to do it like three times in a row or something to get the egg (or whatever it was he was collecting), but I would just sit there trying to do it like 20 or 30 times in a row. Oh, and the final boss fight in that game was SO EPIC.

This is a really good picture of him too, the proportions look right, I especially noticed the legs after you mentioned them (did they change Spyro's legs after a certain period of time?).

"And the sad thing is, that's how most of my art comes into being - second thought after second thought, mistake after mistake. Pity."
^This is me too =P At like 50-80% done I notice something is COMPLETELY off, like the spacing of the eyes or the shading looks like it's coming from two different light sources. I should have taken art classes after middle school D=

Aaah, Fracture Hills, I believe! I loved that one too, especially the bagpipe music the Satyrs would play once you cracked 'em open. ... Sounds strange, but meh. One of the silliest levels had to be Zephyr, with those army-commando-blobs - especially the 'Romeo' one who kept fussing about Juliet. =P

Ahaha, thank you! They changed his hind legs after Enter the Dragonfly, so now he stands on his toes like a regular quadruped. Le sigh.

I KNOOOOW IT'S TERRIBLE ISN'T IT. Except ummm after looking through your gallery I could swear you were in art school at the present time, because omigosh your art is candy for the brain, but yeah.
So. Hmph. You don't have my problem. XD
Channini Featured By Owner Feb 18, 2009  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Oh wow, I hadn't even remembered that about Spyro. I guess there was too much else I hated about the games after Spyro 3 to notice it. And yeah, I also loved the desert level with the two spies, and I remember Romeo and Juliet.

I had too many AP classes in high school to even take art then, and my college doesn't even offer anything besides the STUDY of art -.- So I'm basically self-taught, which means a long, slow road of improvement and painfully noobish mistakes in my art.

That's okay though because I'm sure art schools don't teach pixel art =P
KarleKat Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2009
Hansel and Gretel, yesh? Or I think they changed it to Hansel and Greta. I can't remember that much, I found 'em a little creepy to be honest. XD

Self-taught? Holy cow. I VERY RARELY see someone as good as you that's self-taught. You have my respect!
... I wanna take art classes, personally. I think it'd make stuff easier for me - the art of 'quick sketching' is still a mystery to my poor hand. =P

Yeah but most pixel artists have had professional training or something to get the basics of drawing down and then transfer it to pixels but you haven't had ANY and you're that good and arghwhargl.
I could bite you.
But I like you.
Dilemma! D:
Channini Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2009  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I actually wish I had taken art classes in high school instead of AP courses. And you're right, I think a lot of pixel artists who are professional have majored in art and a lot of the stuff applies. But I also think there is a precision to pixeling that makes it so even an amazing digital artist would still have to spend some time learning the style to be a good pixel artist.

Pixel skills are tough stuff. There's so so much I still wish I could do.
KarleKat Featured By Owner Feb 20, 2009
You're already a fantastic pixel artist, and remember - even the greatest artists in the world never stop learning. Don't ever view it as a lack of talent. :D
